SASKATOON, Sask. – As a record-setting crowd inside SaskTel Centre watched on Saturday night in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, teenage phenom John Crimber (Decatur, Texas) rode supreme, clinching his repeat victory of the PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Canada Cup Series’ Saskatoon Classic, presented by Redhead Equipment and CASE IH, with a monster 90-point ride, catapulted from unraked to No. 15 in the battle for the 2024 Canadian Championship.
The entire rider field for the event was electric. The 28 competing riders went a torrid 36-for-71, covering 50.7% of the bovine athletes.
Crimber got off to a hot start in the opening round, tying for the Round 1 win compliments of an 86.5-point ride atop Smooth Sailor (Shay Marks).
The 19-year-old sensation, who rides for the Florida Freedom in the separate PBR Teams league, then overtook sole ownership of the top spot on the leaderboard when he won Round 2 with an 87.5-point ride aboard Sin Wagon (Vold Rodeo/Prescott).
With the first pick in the championship round bull draft, Crimber selected a familiar opponent in Langham Kid (Two Bit Bucking Bulls). Last season in Saskatoon, Crimber clinched the event win in his Canadian debut after going the distance atop the powerful animal athlete for a mammoth 91.5 points.
Repeating his past success, Crimber remained in perfect time with Langham Kid, matching him jump-for-jump en route to the whistle as the raucous crowd burst into electric cheer. Awarded a monster 91 points, now the high-marked ride on Canadian soil in 2024, the 8-second effort earned Crimber the repeat victory in Saskatoon.
Crimber also won the tour stop’s accompanying 5/5 Bucking Battle, besting Ceili’s Pyper (Foley Bucking Bulls) for 88.5 points.
The bull riding prodigy is now a perfect 6-for-6 in his career while competing in Saskatoon.
Garnering 283 national points, Crimber catapulted from unranked to No. 15 in the race for the 2024 PBR Canada Championship and accompanying $100,000 bonus. He is now within the Top 17 threshold to qualify for the 2024 Command Tubular PBR Canada National Finals, presented by Edmonton’s Best Hotels, on Nov. 8-9 in Edmonton, Alberta, at Rogers Place.
Atop the standings, 2022 PBR Canada Champion Nick Tetz (Calgary, Alberta) retained the No. 1 rank, now leading two-time PBR Canada Champion and No. 2 Cody Coverchuk (Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan) by 20.25 points.
Tetz finished 13th, going 1-for-2. His 84-point ride on Red Rust (Vold Rodeo) in Round 1 earned him 16.5 national points.
Coverchuk was tenth, netting 28.3 national points. The home province hopeful’s 1-for-3 showing was championed by an 86-point ride aboard Deep Creek (Vold Rodeo) in Round 2.
Returning to the top of the event leaderboard, Tanner Eno (Coronation, Alberta) parlayed a perfect 3-for-3 effort into a second-place finish, collecting 158 national points.
Eno advanced to the championship round after riding Mogley (Lazy S Bucking Bulls) for 85 points in Round 1, and Lil’ Hooch (Two Bit Bucking Bulls) for 85.5 points in Round 2.
In the final round, the Albertan went head-to-head with Broken Pearl (Kinky Buckers) in what proved to be a perfect pairing, Eno dominated the bull for 88 points.
Attempting to make a late season push to qualify for the 2024 PBR Canada National Finals, Eno rose from No. 25 to No. 17 in the standings, now holding the last berth to the year-end event.
The Arizona Ridge Riders’ Colten Fritzlan (Rifle, Colorado) delivered a flawless 3-for-3 performance in his PBR Canada debut to conclude the event third.
Fritzlan earned 125.3 national points for his 84.5-point ride on Boogey (Foley Bucking Bulls), 86-point score atop Superstition (X6 Ranch Bucking Cattle/Wilson Rodeo) and 86.5-point trip on Moonwalk (Thompson Rodeo Livestock).
The Colorado native rose from unranked to No. 22 in Canada. He is now 114.75 points outside of the Top 17 threshold to qualify for the 2024 PBR Canada National Finals.
As the final rider to cover all three of his bovine athlete opponents, Stefan Tonita (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) was fourth.
Tonita parlayed an 82-point ride on Teeka (Vold Rodeo/R Saga Ranch), 86-point trip on Wicked Water (Two Bit Bucking Bulls) and 87-point score aboard Dialed In (Wilson Rodeo) into 94.3 national points. He rose from No. 20 to No. 18 in Canada, now 39.75 points behind No. 17 Eno and a berth to the 2024 PBR Canada National Finals.
Rounding out the Top 5 in fifth was Gilmar Santana (Ouro Preto, Brazil).
The Brazilian newcomer tied for the Round 1 win alongside Crimber, besting Talk’s Cheap (Eno Bucking Bulls) for 86.5 points. Santana delivered his second score in the main event in Round 2 when he outlasted Emerald Inn (X6 Ranch Bucking Cattle/B2 Braithwaite Ranches) for 85.5 points. He fell short of contending for the event win in the championship round when he was tossed by Tailor Made (X6 Ranch Bucking Cattle) in 5.83 seconds.
Santana also finished third in the tour stop’s accompanying 5/5 Bucking Battle, riding Hanna Motors Broken Halo (Skori Bucking Bulls) for 83.5 points.
Earning 98.5 national points, Santana rose from No. 14 to No. 10 in Canada.
In the bull pen, Grand Funk (Kinky Buckers) was crowned the YETI “Built for the Wild” Bull of the Event. Bucking in the championship round, the bovine athlete was scored an unrivaled 44.5 national points for his 6.02 seconds of work against Dakota Buttar (Eatonia, Saskatchewan).
Following a two-week break, the 2024 PBR Canada season will conclude in Edmonton, Alberta for the Command Tubular PBR Canada National Finals, presented by Edmonton’s Best Hotels, when the 2024 PBR Canada Champion will be crowned, earning the accompanying $100,000 bonus. Action for the year-end event inside Rogers Place will get underway at 7:00 p.m. MT on Friday, November 8 and Saturday, November 9.
