HUMBOLDT, Sask. – Cody Coverchuk’s (Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan) dominant 2024 campaign continued Friday night in Humboldt, Saskatchewan, as the home province hopeful went a perfect 2-for-2 to win the Discovery Ford’s Battle of the Bulls, furthering his grasp on the No. 1 rank in the race for the season’s PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Canada Championship.

The win was Coverchuk’s PBR-best fourth Touring Pro Division victory of the season. He leads Canada in riding percentage, having gone a torrid 19-for-26 thus far this season, covering a head-turning 73.08% of his bovine athlete opponents.

As action got underway at Discovery Ford Sales Humboldt, Coverchuk was first tasked with Freight Train (CS Bucking Bulls). Reaching the requisite 8 with ease, the two-time PBR Canada Champion was marked 83 points, the fourth-best score of the round.

Coverchuk then went head-to-head with Bare Foot N’ Crazy (Rafter 8 Bulls) in the second round. Matching the powerful animal athlete jump-for-jump, Coverchuk converted, marked an event-best 85 points to clinch the victory.

Garnering 35.5 national points, Coverchuk extended his lead atop the Canadian standings, now 336 points ahead of No. 2 Nick Tetz (Calgary, Alberta). Should Coverchuk continue his dominance and win the 2024 PBR Canada Championship, and accompanying $100,000 bonus, he would tie Aaron Roy (Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan) for most national titles won by one rider with three.

Tetz was also in competition at Discovery Ford’s Battle of the Bulls, however, went 0-for-2. The standout for the Arizona Ridge Riders in the separate PBR Teams league, was bested by Bull Dozzer (Skori Bucking Bulls) in 3.75 seconds in Round 1, before being tossed by War Boy (X6 Ranch Bucking Cattle/Legend Rodeo Stock) in 3.87 seconds in Round 2.

Three-time PBR Canada Champion Roy was second, garnering 19.5 national points.

Despite being bucked off by Hanna Motors Sure Shot (Skori Bucking Bulls) in 3.13 seconds in Round 1, the veteran competitor was quick to rebound in Round 2. He rode Whiskey Clouds (Skori Bucking Bulls) for an event-best 85 points to catapult up the leaderboard.

Roy, who is seeking his unprecedented fourth PBR Canada Championship this November, rose from No. 17 to No. 16 in the national standings.

Ashton Sahli (Red Deer, Alberta) and Dusty Golden (Mayerthorpe, Alberta) tied for third, each earning 17 national points.

Splitting the Round 1 win with 84.5-point rides, Sahli topped Hoo Bangin (X6 Ranch Bucking Cattle) while Golden conquered Ramrod (CJ Bucking Bulls).

Sahli rose one position in the standings, from No. 8 to No. 7, climbing within 541 points of the top spot. Golden surged two positions from No. 22 to No. 20.

Rounding out the Top 5 in fifth was Chanse Switzer (Hazenmore, Saskatchewan).

Switzer rode Bunged Up (CS Bucking Bulls) for 84 points in the opening round to collect 13 national points.

Chasing his first PBR Canada Championship, Switzer rose one position in the Canadian standings from No. 9 to No. 8. He is now 547 points behind No. 1 Coverchuk.

In the bull pen, Huckle Berry (X6 Ranch Bucking Cattle) bucked a cut above the rest, crowned the Bull of the Event. Out in Round 2, Huckleberry tossed Sahli in 4.63 seconds to earn an unmatched 44.5-point bull score.

The 2024 PBR Canada seasons continues Friday, June 28 in Cluny, Alberta. Action for the Touring Pro Division’s Cluny Lions Charity PBR at Coulee Creek Farms gets underway at 6:00pm MDT.
