2020 ENDS IN GRANDE PRAIRIE – For the first time in league history, PBR Canada will crown its National Champion in Grande Prairie, Alberta, with the 2020 PBR Canada Champion set to be anointed on Nov. 7 inside Revolution Place following a daunting three-day, four-event slate of Monster Energy Tour competition. At the provincial level, while Saskatoon has hosted the season-culminating for the past decade, the 2020 PBR Canada Monster Energy Tour Finals Week will mark the first time since 2009 that the province of Alberta will hold the league’s national finals. In a unique season that has seen just five Touring Pro Division stops, four Monster Energy Tour events and two 5/5 Bucking Battles, the 2020 PBR Canada Champion will be decided Nov. 5-7 as riders compete through the PBR Shell Rotella Challenge (Nov. 5 at 7:00 p.m. MST), PBR Wrangler Chute Out (Nov. 6 at 7:00 p.m. MST), PBR Cooper Tires Classic (Nov. 7 at 7:00 p.m. MST) and PBR Built Ford Tough Championship (Nov. 7 at TBC). With the 2020 PBR Canada Champion poised to collect the coveted $20,000 bonus, an additional $27,500 will be available to the riders through the purses of the four events.

EVENT FORMAT & POINTS: ANYONE CAN WIN – In a deviation from the normal format, the 2020 PBR Canada Monster Energy Tour Finals Week will be comprised of four events. The season-culminating weekend will get underway with the PBR Shell Rotella Challenge on Thursday, November 5 at 7:00 p.m. MT. Featuring 25 riders, all will compete in Round 1, with the Top 10 advancing to the championship round. On Friday, November 6 at 7:00 p.m. MT, the PBR Wrangler Chute Out will be held at Revolution Place, again featuring all 25 enter riders in Round 1, followed by the Top 10 riders competing in the championship round. For the final day of the 2020 PBR Canada Monster Energy Tour Finals Week on Saturday, November 7, eventgoers in Grande Prairie, and viewers around the world on RidePass and TSN will witness a double-header. The evening’s events will begin with 25-rider PBR Cooper Tires Classic at 7:00 p.m. MT. Featuring one round, the event winner will be the high-marked rider of the event. Following the PBR Cooper Tires Classic, the Top 15 riders in the national standings will advance to the final event of the 2020 season, the PBR Built Ford Tough Championship. In the season-culminating event, the 15 qualifying riders will face one final bull in an effort to be crowned the 2020 PBR Canada Champion.

Like any Monster Energy Tour event, all four events that comprise the 2020 PBR Canada Monster Energy Tour Finals Week will award points towards both the world and Canadian national standings. World points will be awarded to riders based on their overall event finish, while Canadian points will be earned by both their performance in the rounds and overall event.

On both Thursday, November 5 and Friday, November 6 one rider will have the chance to earn 80 national points and 15 world points, with 75 national and 15 world points on the line at both one-round events on Saturday, November 7. Collectively, one rider will have the chance to earn 310 national points and 60 world points in Grande Prairie. Consequently, all competing riders throughout the 2020 PBR Canada Monster Energy Tour Finals Week will have the chance to leave Revolution Place as the 2020 PBR Canada Champion.

CAN BUTTAR CONVERT FOR FIRST CHAMPIONSHIP – For the second time in as many years, Dakota Buttar will travel to the PBR Canada Finals as a top contender for the year’s national title. However, this season, after entering the 2019 PBR Canada Finals as the No. 2-ranked rider, he will step boot inside Revolution Place in Grande Prairie, Alberta as the nation’s No. 1, 99.5 points ahead of No. 2 Brock Radford. However, with 310 national points on the line, anything can happen. For Buttar his 2019 season ended in disappointing fashion. After winning the event’s opening two rounds to overtake the No. 1 ranking, two buckoffs in the event’s final rounds opened the door for Daylon Swearingen to overtake him and win the nation’s 2019 championship. Determined to not repeat history, Buttar began the season in electric fashion riding a record-tying 11 consecutive bulls, and winning three consecutive events to take firm control of the nation’s No. 1 ranking.

Inside the Nutrien Western Event Centre for the Monster Energy Tour’s season launch, Buttar captured his career-first win on nation’s premier series after going a perfect 3-for-3. Buttar began his march to victory when he recorded the fourth-best score of Round 1, logging an 85.5-point ride aboard Scarecrow. In Round 2, Buttar then faced a familiar opponent. Drawing Mish Mash, the Saskatchewan man had previously ridden the bovine athlete to a Round 1 win at the 2019 PBR Canada Finals, scored 86 points. In Calgary, Buttar again reached the 8-second whistle, this time marked 85.5 points. Sitting atop the aggregate entering the championship round, Buttar architected his second rematch of the night, drafting two-time PBR World Finals selection Tykro Pound Sand for the championship round. The duo had met once prior, teaming up for an 87.5-point score during the championship round of the 2018 PBR Canada Finals. Known to propel riders to notable victories, with phenom Swearingen winning both the 2019 PBR Canada Finals and PBR Canada Championship aboard the bovine athlete, Tykro Pound Sand once again earned his rider a coveted buckle. Brining the record-setting crowd to its feet, Buttar recorded an 87.5-point ride to cement his victory. Courtesy of the win, the four-time PBR World Finals qualifier earned $5,373.70, in addition to 83 Canadian and 30 world points. Buttar also competed in the first-ever 5/5 Bucking Battle in Calgary, riding Hanna Motors Homeboy for 86 points to finish second and net an additional 12 Canadian points. As a result, Buttar further extended his lead atop the national standings, travelling to the next event No. 1 in the nation and 47 points in front of No. 2 Garrett Green.

As the tour travelled to Lethbridge for the second premier series event of the year, Buttar’s momentum continued. As one of seven riders to record a score in Round 1, Buttar logged his seventh consecutive ride on home soil when he covered Big Tymer for 84.5 points. The Kindersley native then remained flawless in the event when he reached the 8 aboard Kubota’s Big Orange Tractor for 87.5 points, the second best score of Round 2. In the championship round, the rivalry between Buttar and Tykro Pound Sand was once again renewed. As the last man to leave the chutes, Buttar was once again in picture perfect form, matching Tykro Pound Sand jump for jump as he reached the 8, earning a 86-point score and his second consecutive Monster Energy Tour win. At the Lethbridge event, Buttar also participated in the second-ever 5/5 Bucking Battle, riding VJV Whiskey Hand for 86 points to finish third. Collectively netting 69 Canadian points, Buttar continued to expand his lead atop the national standings, now a season-best 100.5 points ahead of No. 2 Brock Radford.

Following the unprecedented shutdown, when the PBR Canada Monster Energy Tour resumed competition in July with two closed events inside ENMAX Centre, Buttar’s streak came to an end. After riding his first bull in the opening event, an 83.5-point score on Trippy Hippy, Buttar was bucked off on home soil for the first time in 2020 when Blow Me Away narrowly bested the Saskatchewan man, sending him to the dirt in heartbreaking 7.83 seconds. Unable to rebound, Buttar went 0-for-1 in the evening iteration of the double-header of the Alberta event, dispatched in a swift, 1.81-second fashion by Finning Drop Bear. While he remained No. 1 in the nation, Buttar’s lead was significantly decimated, leaving ENMAX Centre with a 67.5-point lead over No. 2 Brock Radford.

While the Monster Energy Tour has not been back in competition since, the Touring Pro Division has been active, holding three events. While Buttar was blanked in two of those events, including the most recent in late September in Ponoka, Alberta, he was able to grow his lead courtesy of a win at the prestigious Glen Keeley Memorial. Once again teaming with Tykro Pound Sand for the victory, this time via a massive 90.5-point ride, Buttar was able to earn an additional 32 national points. As action for the 2020 PBR Canada Monster Energy Tour Finals Week gets underway on November 5, Buttar will first attempt Just A Jam’n from Vold Rodeo.

RADFORD EYES WORLD FINALS BERTH – Could 2020 finally be the year Brock Radford leaves the PBR Canada Finals as the season’s national champion? After finishing just short of the national title the past three seasons, including back-to-back, runner-up finishes in 2017 and 2018, Radford is the top challenger to No. 1 Dakota Buttar ahead of the 2020 PBR Canada Monster Energy Tour Finals Week, within 99.5 points of the top spot.

For Radford, while his season began at the first Touring Pro Division event of the year in early December in Dawson Creek, British Columbia, it wasn’t until the subsequent weekend in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan that he notched his first national points. Going a perfect 2-for-2 to finish runner-up to Buttar, Radford earned his first 10 national points of the year climbing to No. 3 in Canada. The next event on Canadian soil then marked the season-launch for the Monster Energy Tour, as the nation’s premier series bucked into Calgary. In addition to winning the first-ever 5/5 Bucking Battle, courtesy of an 89-point ride on Cool Bricks, Radford also finished 17th in the main event after going 1-for-3. Collecting 15 national points, Radford left his home province event as the No. 5 ranked rider in the nation, 93.5 points behind No. 1 Buttar. In Lethbridge however, Radford turned up the heat. Once again converting in the 5/5 Bucking Battle, fittingly re-matched with Cool Bricks who he rode for 88 points to finish the special round second, the DeWinton cowboy logged a matching runner-up effort in the main event after going 2-for-3. His matching silver finishes earned him a crucial 62 national points, allowing him to rise three positions in the national standings to No. 2.

Following the unprecedented shutdown, Radford was electric in the return of competition when the league held two closed events inside ENMAX Centre. Compliments of an 86-point ride on Bull of the Year contender Stuntman Hank, Radford tied for his first Monster Energy Tour event win of the year, netting a critical 58.5 national points. As a result, he surged within 67.5 points of the No. 1 ranking. While Radford has competed in all three Touring Pro Division events since, he has been unable to convert, allowing Buttar’s lead to swell. As the 2020 PBR Canada Monster Energy Tour Finals Week gets underway, Radford will attempt Straight Up G from Vold Rodeo on Thursday, November 5.

In addition to seeking his career-first PBR Canada Championship, Radford is also position to qualify for the 2020 PBR World Finals via a dominant performance inside Revolution Place. Presently No. 46 in the world, Radford is within 38.67 points of the Top 35 and a berth to the sport’s most prestigious event on Nov. 12-15 in Arlington, Texas at AT&T Stadium.

MARKS PULLS DOUBLE DUTY – RIDER & CONTRACTOR – For the second event comprising the 2020 PBR Canada Monster Energy Tour Finals Week, the PBR Wrangler Chute Out on Thursday, November 6, one name will appear on both sides of the draw – Shay Marks. While the Sunnybrook-native will be an active competitor contending for the 2020 PBR Canada Championship, he will also be appearing as a stock contractor for the second time in his career on the elite Monster Energy Tour. His outfit made its debut on the nation’s premier series in July at the closed events held in Lethbridge, Alberta. Dakota Buttar covered Trippy Hippy for 83.5 points, while Dirty Lies bucked off Wyatt Gleeson in 2.22 seconds, Glass Handle dispatched Wacey Finkbeiner in 3.12 seconds, and Family Feud bested Ty Ellis in 3.30 seconds. In Grande Prairie on the second night of competition, Dirty Lies will return to the line-up, drawn by Jared Parsonage, while Headstruck will make his PBR debut with Fabian Dueck. During that event, Marks, who is currently No. 25 in the national standings and 268.5 points behind No.1 Dakota Buttar, will attempt Duck Soup later that evening.  On the first night of action for the PBR Canada Monster Energy Tour Finals Week, Marks will attempt Hanna Motors Full Throttle during the PBR Shell Rotella Challenge.

PAST PBR CANADA CHAMPIONS – Set to ride at the 2020 PBR Canada Monster Energy Tour Finals Week are two former Champions, both looking to make further history. Three-time PBR Canada Champion Aaron Roy enters the event No. 8 in the nation, 191.5 points behind the top ranking, while two-time PBR Canada Champion Zane Lambert is No. 5 and 168 points back. Roy and Lambert are the only two multi-time Canadian Champions in league history. While a fourth title for Roy would be unprecedented, should Lambert claim the coveted honor, he would be tied with Roy for most Canadian Championships. The complete list of past Canadian Champions is:

2019                 Daylon Swearingen

2018                 Cody Coverchuk

2017                 Zane Lambert

2016                 Ty Pozzobon

2015                 Tanner Byrne

2011                 Tyler Thomson

2010                 Aaron Roy

2009                 Beau Hill

2008                 Aaron Roy

2007                 Tyler Pankewicz

2006                 Scott Schiffner

PAST EVENT WINNERS – In addition to being the only two Canadian Champions competing at the 2020 PBR Canada Monster Energy Tour Finals Week, Aaron Roy and Zane Lambert are also the only two past Canadian Finals event winners set to ride this season inside Revolution Place. While Roy won the season-culminating event in 2014, Lambert is the lone rider to win the event in multiple years, let alone in back-to-back campaigns. After winning the event for the first time in his career in 2016, Lambert emerged victorious again in 2017 en route to his second national title. The complete list of past Canadian Finals event winners is:

2019                 Daylon Swearingen

2009                 Guilherme Marchi

2008                 Jock Connolly

2007                 Vince Northrup

2006                 Brian Canter

A STREAK CONTINUES – In PBR Canada history, one man has qualified for, and competed at, all fourteen editions of the event – Zane Lambert. Continuing the streak, the two-time PBR Canada Champion has further etched his name in the record books, qualifying for the 2020 edition of the event, his 15th qualification, as the No. 4-ranked rider in the nation, 168 points behind No. 1 Dakota Buttar. Should Lambert make a come-from-behind push at the season-culminating event like he did in 2017 to win his second national championship, Lambert would tie three-time PBR Canada Champion Aaron Roy for winningest bull rider in the nation’s history. On home soil in 2020, Lambert has gone 8-for-16, logging five Top-5 finishes. Entering the season-culminating event, Lambert is arguable one of the hottest riders competing. After finishing second at the Touring Pro Division’s Tanner Byrne Invitational in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan in August, Lambert rode to a fifth-place and runner-up finish at the following two developmental tour events for the Glen Keeley Memorial in Stavely, Alberta, and Lockdown Bull Bash in Ponoka, Alberta, respectively.

Roy will also compete at the quartet of the events, presently No. 8 in the PBR Canada National Standings, 191.5 points behind No. 1 Dakota Buttar. Thus far in 2020, the 33-year-old veteran has gone an impressive 7-for-15, recording four Top-10 finishes. His top performance of the year was a third-place finish at the season-launch Monster Energy Tour event in Calgary.

FAMILIAR WATERS At each of the first three events for the 2020 PBR Canada Monster Energy Tour Finals Week, fans will witness rematches, with the number of riders attempting familiar foes increasing as the events progress.

For the PBR Shell Rotella Challenge on Thursday, November 5, two riders will face rematches, with one having found prior success. Currently ranked No. 15 in the national standings, 252.5 points behind No. 1 Dakota Buttar, Jordan Hansen will attempt Jappy Feeling Dangerous for the second time in his career. First meeting in 2019 at the Monster Energy Tour event in Edmonton, Alberta, Hansen made the 8 aboard the Wild Hogg’s bovine athlete for 84 points. Three-time PBR Canada Champion Aaron Roy will also begin the 2020 PBR Canada Monster Energy Tour Finals Week with a rematch. Drawing Broken Trigger, Roy faced off against the Skori Bucking Bulls’ bovine in 2019 on the Touring Pro Division in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, bucked off in a quick 2.75 seconds.

On the second night of competition for the PBR Cooper Tires Classic on Friday, November 6, four riders will attempt former draws, including Hansen. Once again having previously covered his draw, the Albertan will face Fantastic Pet for the second time in his career. En route to his 2019 Monster Energy Tour event win in Calgary, Hansen covered the bull for an 85-point score. One other rider will also face a bull they have experienced past success aboard – two-time PBR Canada Champion Zane Lambert. Set to square off against Smash for the third time in his career, Lambert will be keen to remain perfect against the Skori-raised bovine. First meeting in 2018 on the Monster Energy Tour in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Lambert made the 8 for 83.5 points. The duo most recently danced in 2019 on the Touring Pro Division in Calgary, Alberta, that time for a score of 82 points. For both young gun Riley Gagnon and Tim Lipsett, they will look to even the score against their bovine counterpart, both bucked off in their one past meeting on record. Gagnon has drawn Diamond Show from Vold Rodeo, bested by the bull earlier this season at the Touring Pro Division in Ponoka, Alberta, bucked off in 2.66 seconds. Lipsett will see a former PBR Canada Finals match-up renewed, facing Broken Trigger after first drawing the bull at the 2018 edition of the season-culminating event when he was bucked off in a swift 1.64 seconds.

The final day of action for the 2020 PBR Canada Monster Energy Tour Finals week on Nov. 7 will begin with seven rematches in the PBR Cooper Tires Classic. Among the riders facing familiar foes, titans of the sport Roy and Lambert will face their second rematches of the weekend. Roy will look to remain perfect against Smash, covering the bull for 85 points during the March Monster Energy Tour event in Lethbridge, Alberta, while Lambert will look to once again make the 8 aboard JB Muley, previously covering the bull for 83.5 points during Round 1 of the 2019 PBR Canada Monster Energy Tour Finals. Garrett Green and Jared Parsonage will also attempt bovine athletes they have previously ridden, drawing Finning Hou’s Deacon and Hanna Motors Full Throttle, respectively. For Green he covered Finning Hou’s Deacon for 85.5 points during the first closed Monster Energy Tour event held in Lethbridge, Alberta. Parsonage’s rematch dates to 2019, having covered Hanna Motors Full Throttle for 82 points during Round 1 of the Touring Pro Division event in Medicine Hat, Alberta. Eager to cover his draw for the first time in his career, Wyatt Gleeson has matched up with the Wild Hoggs’ Tractorland Arizona Dreamin for the fifth time. With all four of their prior meetings witnessed in 2019, Gleeson has never eclipsed the 5-second mark, lasting the longest aboard the bull in their first meeting when he was bucked off in 4.75 seconds during the 2019 Monster Energy Tour event in Calgary. The remaining rematches are:

Fabian Dueck vs. Finning Nikki Sixx (2020 Prince Alberta, Saskatchewan TPD – 6.28 seconds)

Wacey Finkbeiner vs. Rico (2020 Lloydminster, Saskatchewan TPD – Re-Ride)

BULL PEN – BULL OF THE YEAR – After a rider vote determined the recipient of the honor in past seasons, after shifting the award mechanism in 2019, the 2020 PBR Canada Bull of the Year will once again be determined mathematically by the bulls’ performances throughout the season. To be eligible for the 2020 PBR Canada Bull of the Year honor, a bull most have logged a minimum three outs at PBR events on Canadian soil throughout the season. The 2020 PBR Canada Bull of the Year will be the bovine athlete with the best average score of his Top 3 regular-season outs and two trips logged during the three-day, four-event 2020 PBR Canada Monster Energy Tour Finals Week. In addition to receiving the coveted buckle, the Bull of the Year will also be presented with a $2,500 bonus.

Reigning PBR Canada Bull of the Finals Finning Lil Shorty, 2018 PBR Canada Bull of the Year Happy Camper and two-time PBR World Finals bucker Tykro Pound Sand enter the PBR Canada Monster Energy Tour Finals Week locked in an intense battle for the No. 1 ranking as the front-runners for the year-end title, with each animal athlete holding a 43.5-point regular-season average.

Despite the abbreviated season, Flying Four Bucking Bulls’ Finning Lil Shorty delivered three head-turning trips in 2020. Improving each out, the bovine athlete began the season with a 43-point score in December at the Touring Pro Division stop in Lloydminster, Alberta. Finning Lil Shorty next bucked at PBR Canada’s historic return to competition in July inside ENMAX Centre in Lethbridge, Alberta. Matched up with Garrett Green, the two teamed for an event-winning 88-point score, as the 2019 PBR World Finals bucking bull was marked 43.5 points. Concluding his regular-season on home turf for the Prince Albert, Saskatchewan Touring Pro Division event, Finning Lil Shorty again propelled a rider to victory, erupting for a season-high 44 points when covered by Lonnie West for a Tanner Byrne Invitational-winning 89.5 points.

Happy Camper will be seeking history at the sport’s Canadian title event, attempting to become the first two-time PBR Canada Bull of the Year in league history Nov. 5-7 in Grande Prairie. The 2018 PBR Canada Bull of the Year and three-time PBR World Finals selection bucked four times across all levels of competition in 2020. Regarded as “the Bucking Sensation from the Two Bit Nation,” Happy Camper began the unprecedented season with a 43-point trip with Jared Parsonage at the season-launch Monster Energy Tour event in Calgary in January, as the stoic cowboy reached the 8-second whistle for 88 points. Happy Camper then posted a 43.5-point score in Lethbridge before delivering his best trip of the year at September’s Touring Pro Division event in Ponoka, Alberta, a 44-point score compliments of his 6.78-second buckoff of Dayton Johnston.

Tykro Pound Sand, a bull known for propelling riders to victory, including reigning PBR Canada Champion Daylon Swearingen, will be seeking glory of his own in Grande Prairie, attempting to earn his career-first Bull of the Year title. The powerful black and white bull is one of only a few Canadian bovines to have been selected to compete in the United States in 2020, bucking twice at the final regular-season Unleash The Beast event of the year in Nampa, Idaho. In his home nation, where he bucked five times across all levels of competition, Tykro Pound Sand was twice marked a head-turning 44 points, both elevating Canadian No. 1 Dakota Buttar (Kindersley, Saskatchewan) to event wins. The two first teamed for an 87.5-point score at the January Monster Energy Tour event in Calgary, before Buttar again reached the requisite 8 aboard the Wild Hoggs’ bull for a monstrous 90.5 points in Stavely, Alberta to win the prestigious Glen Keeley Memorial.

The complete list of contenders for this year’s PBR Canada Bull of the Year honor are:

No. 1 (tie)         Finning Lil Shorty

No. 1 (tie)         Happy Camper

No. 1 (tie)         Tykro Pound Sand

No. 4                Catch My Drift

No. 7 (tie)         Spooky Lukie

No. 7 (tie)         Stuntman Hank

No. 10.             Finning Twitch

HAPPY CAMPER AIMS FOR RECORD BOOKS – Since the first PBR Canada Bull of the Year was crowned in 2006, no bovine athlete has claimed the coveted title twice. This year, however, 2018 PBR Canada Bull of the Year Happy Camper will look to write his name in the history books as the first to accomplish the feat. After a dominant season in 2018, Happy Camper just narrowly missed winning the Bull of the Year honor in consecutive seasons in 2019. Entering the 2019 PBR Canada Finals ranked No. 3 in the race, despite a dominant 45-point out at the season-culminating event, he was unable to surpass Homegrown, finishing No. 2 by a slim 0.08 points. Entering this year’s PBR Canada Finals Week atop the leaderboard, Happy Camper, who last bucked in September in Ponoka, Alberta, will need two dominant outs inside Revolution Place to distance himself from Tykro Pound Sand and Finning Lil Shorty who are tied atop the regular-season leaderboard, and prevent a come-from-behind push from one of the other 2020 PBR Canada Bull of the Year contenders.

PROVIDING PROTECTION – The bullfighters on hand for this weekend’s event in Grande Prairie are Tanner Byrne, Brett Monea, and Ty Prescott.
