No.5 – The 90-Point Club

CALGARY – Only 15 days remain before the launch of the 2018 PBR Canada Monster Energy Tour, set to begin its third season as the nation’s premier tour. Before we begin the season in Calgary on March 24, we look back to the Top 10 moments from the 2017 PBR Canada season.

Coming in at the No.5 are the season’s 90-point bull rides, a rare feat in the sport with less than 1% of all outs ending in the result.

Last season, Pérola, Brazil’s Fabiano Vieira put up the first 90-point effort of the season on K-C/Josie McElroy Bucking Bulls/Spark-lin Acres’ Jammin’ Jackson’s Handsome Jeff, marked 90.5 points in the Championship Round of the PBR’s first International Major in Québec City, Québec. Held in June, the event was the first stop for the Monster Energy Tour in 2017.

The ride propelled Vieira to a second place finish inside the Videotron Centre, collectively going 2-for-3 at the landmark event. Prior to the recording the first 90-point ride of the Canadian season, the Brazilian rider covered Cornwell Bucking Bulls’ Mud Duck for 86.5 points in Round 2.

The finish earned him $23,100 and 120 points towards the world standings, elevating him from No.21 to No.18 in the world in a season which saw him end the year the No. 10 in the world.

On the heels of the successful event in Quebec City, PBR Canada will once again return to the Videotron Centre with the Monster Energy Tour in 2018, set to hold the second-ever International Major on May 18-19. Tickets are now on sale at Ticketmaster.ca.

The 90-point effort in Canada was Vieira’s high-marked ride of the year which saw him go on to earn two event victories, one in Calgary, Alberta at the Ranchman’s PBR Bullbustin’ in Support of the Sheldon Kennedy Child Advocacy Centre on July 6, part of the Canadian Touring Pro Division, and another at the PBR Major in Nashville, Tennessee on August 18.

The second 90-point effort obtained in Canada in 2017 would come at a prestigious event, the Glen Keeley Memorial Bull Riding in Stavely, Alberta on September 2 in PBR Canada Touring Pro Division competition.  

There, Jared Parsonage would tie with the eventual 2017 PBR Canada Champion Zane Lambert for the event win where both would face a ride-off bull for a check worth $12,500 for the top score.

Lambert, also the 2013 PBR Canada Champion, began the night covering Dynamite Buckers’ Star Dust for 83.5 points in Round 1, which he followed with a round-winning 87-point ride aboard Skori Bucking Bulls’ Monkey Nuts in the championship round.

For Parsonage, he opened the Saturday night event riding Girletz Rodeo Stock’s Dilly Gaff for 84 points in Round 1. In the championship round, he started off with an 81-point effort on Wild Hoggs Bucking Bulls’ Tykro Checkered Flag but took advantage of re-ride option on Smiling Bob, also from the Wild Hoggs, scoring 86.5 points to match Lambert.

As co-event winners, both Canadian riders had their shot at a Glen Keeley Memorial Bull Riding bounty bull.

Lambert bucked off Vold Rodeo/Prescott’s Blow Me Away), but Parsonage covered PBR World Finals bucking bull Johnny Ringo, also from Vold Rodeo/Prescott, for 90 points to earn the $12,500 bonus. The 90-point ride was Parsonage’s first of his four-year PBR career.

Parsonage left Stavely with a grand total of $16,179.65 in prize money and finished the 2017 PBR Canada Season in the No.8 spot with $32,669.00 in earnings and the No.63 spot in the broader PBR world standings.

Holistically, the 2017 season was a career-high for Parsonage despite breaking his jaw, sidelining him for nearly three months. On the year he boasted one of, if not the highest riding percentages, going 16-for-24 (66.6%) with two event wins. With the potential for a full season in 2018, there’s no telling how high Parsonage can reach. Shoot, he’s pretty tall already.

Parsonage began the 2018 season this past Saturday in Lethbridge, Alberta, finishing 17^th after riding Girletz Rodeo Stock’s Blue Print for 79.5 points in Round 1.

This week, friend and travelling partner Jordan Hansen mentioned the Saskatchewan-native as one we might expect to see represent Team Canada at the second-ever PBR Global Cup in Sydney, Australia in June.
